Extra leaf quarters, the 2004 and 2005 buffalo nickel varieties, the presidential dollar edge-lettering errors, and the 2009 bicentennial cents.
Twenty-first century coinage is collected now in a way it was not when it was struck, and the errors of the period - wrong planchets, missing clad layers, the transitional cents - are still being pulled out of circulation.

The difficulty
The problem with modern varieties is that almost every candidate is a die stage rather than a variety. Dies crack, chip and deteriorate as they strike, and each stage leaves a mark that looks like a discovery to the person who finds it first.
The die-state tracker orders coins from one die early to late by how the cracks and wear grow, so a mark that appears late in a die's life is recognisable as what it is. A variety is present from the first coin; a die stage arrives partway through.
